| This
2 day 2 night retreat attracts Chinese language teachers from all around New Zealand
and include past NZ Teachers China Scholarship holders who have been on professional
development training at the prestigious Peking University. In 2010, we welcomed
teachers from Wellington, Masterton, Rotorua and Auckland. This
Teachers Retreat aims to build on the Foundation's very successful language and
culture immersion days and camps for students, which has been offered annually
since 2005. Teachers
are placed in a total immersion environment learning about Chinese cuisine, history,
customs and daily life. They participate in workshops on calligraphy, painting,
paper cutting, shadow plays, lantern making, Chinese medicine as well as sessions
of taichi, cooking, games and song. Our
focus is on " direct learning" by saturating the environment with language
situational opportunities. We work on the principle of "repeated practice"
in an authentic environment, through various learning approaches of cultural awareness,
games, songs, and performances to achieve the ultimate goal of stimulating learners'
motivation and achieve effective learning resulting from relaxing interactions
between instructors and teachers. By
bringing together experienced and successful instructors in this innovative programme,
we hope to be successful in consolidating language, extending knowledge of culture,
and motivating teachers to continue with their Chinese studies and teaching. |
