Chinese Language and Culture Camp | |
| CLF
has held annual residential Chinese Language and Culture Camps and Immersion Days
for intermediate students since December 2005. The
2005, 2006 and 2007 camps were three day immersion events with a fun-packed programme
of games and activities aimed at building learning skills for Chinese language
and culture. Group activities include lion dance, diabolo, kung fu, Chinese New
Year customs, costume drama and Chinese calligraphy. These camps were themed around
festivals, traditional games and the Olympics. The programme ended with a performance
by the students on the third day of the Camp. However,
due to increased demand from schools and to cater to larger groups of students,
we began in 2008 to offer one day immersion experiences which are offered to students
studying Chinese in Auckland intermediate schools, with priority given to schools
in the Chinese Language Foundation Network.
This innovative programme
has been successful in consolidating language, extending knowledge of culture,
and motivating students to continue with their Chinese studies. All instructors
and organisers are volunteers guided by experienced teachers of language.
Annually
since 2008, we have had the generous support of Kristin School who have hosted
this Day at their premises. In 2010, we added another location at ACG Strathallen
School as the number of students to this event increased and the geographical
reach of schools extended. Students and teachers are bussed from their respective
schools to the event.
From 2010, the Chinese Language and Culture Day is
jointly organised by the Chinese Language Foundation (CLF) and the recently formed
New Zealand Chinese Teaching Trust (NZCTT), both New Zealand non-profit organisations
whose aim is to promote Chinese language and encourage New Zealanders to learn
Chinese. | | | | | 2010
Chinese Language and Culture Day jointly organised by CLF and NZCTT 20
November 2010, ACG Strathallen School 27 November 2010, Kristin School | | | | | | The
"Chinese Language and Culture Day" is a specially designed and
modelled extracurricular programme, catering for primary school and Intermediate
school students not of Chinese descent who are learning Chinese in their schools.
This year, in order to increase the opportunities for greater participation, the
CLF and NZCTT have expanded the culture day in scale. In addition to the associated
school teachers and parents from participating schools, 50 volunteers have been
invited to develop and help run the programme at the culture day. All volunteers
come from countries where Chinese is the mother tongue, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong,
China and Singapore. Some are teachers in mainstream and community schools; others
are enthusiasts in promoting Chinese language. Having the ability and advantage
of being bilingual, and in association with CLF, they all contribute to advancing
the education of Chinese language in New Zealand. Students
will use what they have learnt at school to interact with Chinese speaking volunteers
in a variety of traditional Chinese folk activities - diabolo, spinning top, lion
dance and chopstick games. As well they will further their studies with teachers
of Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting art, Chinese knots, abacus, fun Chinese
characters, shadow puppet play, Chinese medicine and martial arts. In addition,
there will be traditional Chinese costumes available for students to try on and
be photographed in. More
than 150 students, who are currently learning Chinese, from 10 schools in Auckland
were invited to participate in this exciting culture day. Based on the notion
of "understanding culture through language; learning language through cultural
experience", this culture day hprovided an unforgettable day for everyone. Teachers
